This shouldn't make me so happy. I just gave out my business card for the first time. I feel stupidly pleased with myself. Now I can pretend I'm a real grown-up and everything!

Quiet I'm the only one in my office today. o_o Both of my office-mates are on vacation today, presumably to take advantage of the Labor Day holiday. In any case, it means I'm all alone - plus, since our office is located at the very back of our departmental suite-thingy, it's super quiet in this whole area. Today might be one of those days when I get up and walk over to co-workers when I have questions for them, rather than just emailing or calling them. *lonely* In other news, today is my last day in the office for a bit - I'm taking some vacation myself, and I won't be be back to work until a week from Monday. ^_______^ ratzeo and I are going to use this week to finish unpacking (though we're almost done, huzzah!), go shopping for household supplies, spruce the place up for our housewarming, and just take it easy at home with very few outside obligations. I cannot wait. (Please note that we do not yet have internet service in the apartment, so after I leave work today I won't have internet access until ... well, until we get hooked up, and I don't know how soon that will be. So in the meantime, if anyone local needs to get a hold of me, please give me a call.) Current Mood: relaxed |

the best medicine I am fabulously good at talking myself in circles when I'm feeling down, at chasing that downward spiral until I hate myself and everyone else and THE WHOLE GODDAMN WORLD OKAY -- but that leads nowhere good.
So instead let's talk about happy things! Tell me something, fannish or not, that's made you happy recently.
I'll start.
I love the way Minekura writes emotional resonance between men. I love the fact that she writes these incredibly intense relationships without putting sex on the page, so she sidesteps the tiger trap of seme/uke and instead just makes all of their gravitational pull toward each other incredibly vivid while they both/all remain badass. It's like Victorian "passionate friendship" but with more cursing and guns. ♥
edit I'm sorry I've stopped responding, guys I promise I'll get back to you as soon as I feel a little better |

crossover game? Guys, I am really sorry I've been so quiet lately and not-fic-posting. I...my brain has been utterly shot since about Friday and I can't concentrate worth a damn. But playing around doesn't take a lot of concentration! So here goes. Give me a fandom, and a character from a different fandom, and I will tell you what I would have that character do in that crossover. I will try to do this with any fandom I've played in, but I will probably still be unpleasant to characters I dislike, and I cannot vouch for my ability to do a good job with large-cast fandoms that I never got heavily into (e.g., Bleach). b) People who've been to Seattle: any recommendations for hotels/motels/etc in or around the U District?
iii) People of the world: How do you recommend getting odor out of a refrigerator?

Need help (again) ratzeo's and my new apartment (♥♥♥) is in need of a vacuum cleaner. Since I'll be getting a cat at some point, I'd like to buy a vacuum that works well on pet hair, so I come to the communal expertise of the Internet. Do any cat owners out there have a recommendation for a reliable, not-horrendously-expensive machine? (My coworkers rave about the Dyson vacuum, but those things run upwards of $400, so ...) |

Wild Adapter - translation? So uh It's possible that I've just run into a quick description of Wild Adapter that got my attention a little.
So I ask you, because surely one of you fine people must know: how is Tokyopop's translation of it?
I really prefer to read manga from actual books instead of scans where possible, but I know that a lot of american publishers have a history of, uh, removing the good bits from manga titles, toning down the queerness of the language and censoring out explicit images. Can anybody tell me how this one stacks up in that regard? Is it worth the money? |

this bright red feeling I'm not a writer. I'm not eloquent or wordy or terribly articulate at the best of times. These are not, in any sense, the best of times. This post by mahokiwi details the official backing of the ludicrously-titled 'conscience' rule by the Bush Administration. Meaning that any and all medical personnel are now completely covered if they refuse to provide abortion, or even contraception, to patients. Kiwi has links in her post to things you can do. Write to your representatives. Provide feedback on the rule at consciencecomment@hhs.gov (put "provider conscience regulation" -- HA! -- as the subject line). Donate to Planned Parenthood. And for fuck's sake, VOTE on November the 7th. You have a voice. MAKE IT HEARD.I don't care if you're male or female, young or old, queer or straight, whether you have ten children or if you plan never to have any, if you love sex or are happily celibate, whether you are Democratic, Republican, or couldn't care less about all this political bullshit. It doesn't matter. This administration is a fucking joke, and now they've made every woman in America the punchline. So if you have any respect for women, for humanity, for the right of an individual to make decisions about her own body, stand up and say something about it. And if you don't -- what the fuck are you doing here? Current Mood: enraged |

Please. This is heavy, serious business, and I fear that is a big turn off to a lot of people, but please, hear me out -- The Bush Administration officially backs the conscience ruleFor those who are unaware, this legislation states that all medical facilities that receive government funding would essentially need to promise that they wouldn't fire their doctors (or nurses or scalpel washers) for deciding that, based on "moral objections", they would not treat their patients. Officially, this is meant to apply to abortion, but the new legislation makes the definition of "abortion" so fuzzy that it would also allow health clinics to deny birth control prescriptions or emergency contraception to rape victims. Please, do something. This is the rule, as it will appear. This will go into effect in 30 days. Here are some quick and easy ways to speak up: -- Write to your legislator. This is insanely easy. You fill in your name, address and state, and this site will automatically find your state legislator and send them an email. You can even choose for it to be a form email, if you're not feeling eloquent. Or you can write one of your own. --Send an email to consciencecomment@hhs.gov (Make sure to put provider conscience regulation as the subject line -- Make a donation to Planned Parenthood, who is fighting this issue as hard as they can. --if you're especially proactive, you can use congress.org to search for your state government officials (by zipcode) and contact them directly. Please. I don't care if you're eloquent, witty, or whatever. This is not only just about abortion, either -- this is about being allowed to make your own choices about what is best for your own health. I know plenty of women who take birth control for reasons other than preventing pregnancy, but even that aside, that choice should not rest in a stranger's hands. Any doctor who would put their own mental comfort before the physical well being of their patient is not a doctor I would want, nor is it a doctor who anyone should have to be attended by. Any doctor who would make that choice is unfit for the position. As patients, we are told that we can trust our doctors -- strangers! -- with our lives. We can trust that they will do their best to keep us safe and healthy. Allowing doctors to pick and choose which people they will help, based on their own moral leanings, completely destroys that trust. I wrote a couple of letters, this afternoon. I got a response back from Senator Murray's office -- and while most of it is more or less c/p form, it at least acknowledges that my opinion was heard. It also states that she is a)aware and b)opposed and working against the legislation. These are positive things. Also provided is more information about the issue itself: ( the response I received )Please, don't just sit there quietly. This is (y)our country. If you know any women at all that matter to you. Your mother, your friends, yourself. Please Current Mood: terrified |

Day three ...and the humans are cohabiting pretty well -- cadence had the forethought to plug in a power strip in a convenient spot so we can now all plug in and sit on the couch with our laptops, which, well. What else do you need? (...we're going to have to take pictures of our video game shelves, because seriously, it's ridiculous. ♥) The cats...well, they're not violent. So that's pretty good! Periodically each of them will discover Those Other Bastard Cats still in the house, and a round of hissing and growling (or squeaking, as the case may be) will ensue. But that's not too bad, for only three days in, I figure. Fran and Balthier understand that they're still a team, and aren't hassling each other at all. Ren and Garnet are less like team players, and are only nice to each other when Fran and Balthier aren't around; if one of them shows up, then suddenly ALL CATS ARE THE ENEMY, so Ren and Garnet start hissing at each other in addition to their new friends. >->; Oh, failcats. IN COMPLETELY OTHER NEWS, you guys, there's a 15_minute_fic asylum over here! I had no idea! I used to love the original version on LJ back when I was, er, a single-fandom creature only playing in FMA. Whatever year that was. :3 Current Mood: hungry |

fic pointer: "Surface," P3/Trinity Soul Happy birthday, threewalls! This...is not what I had in mind for posting today, originally, but the other thing wasn't cooperating fast enough and these guys would, so. I hope you like it. ^^; Surface, Shinjiro/Akihiko in Trinity Soul continuity (so AU for both, basically), ~1800 words, suggestive on the m/m front but not explicit. Trinity Soul spoilers through about episode 15. It's nearing midnight, and Akihiko is brewing another pot of coffee -- and hating himself for it; at least if it were tea he could tell himself the antioxidants made up for the caffeine -- when his phone buzzes.
He pulls it off his belt. "Sanada."
"Thought you'd still be awake."
Akihiko blinks, and sits down hard in one of the rickety chairs at his kitchen table. "Shinji," he says. Current Mood: hopeful |

five favorite fics meme ...I was going to combine this with the "ten awesome people on your flist" meme that mitsuhachi just did, but then I couldn't bring myself to pick just ten, and was afraid I would hurt somebody's feelings by leaving hir out. ^^; Matter of fact, I'm almost afraid of doing something like that with stories, which clearly do not have feelings to hurt. er. >->; So the point of this meme is to choose your top five favorites of your own fics -- not the ones that you think are "best," necessarily, or the ones that got the most response, but the ones that you liked most, for whatever reason. I...Have about a zillion stories to choose from! (...Not quite. There are ~320 pieces on my web site.) So narrowing it down was pretty tricky. But here's a go at them: Practically a Fairy Tale, the one where Basch and Vossler are members of the Feitas River Dragon Cavalry. I had such a good time putting the two of them into Suiko-verse, and writing the dragon horses, and the part where Vossler turns out to be a big smooshy romantic when he's not under kingdom-destroying stress. To Call It Home, the only substantial Sleepy Hollow story I ever finished, and still one of my longer fanfic pieces (at ~7700 words), and -- well. It's melodramatic and over-the-top and the language is utterly tormented in spots, and that was so much fun. Oh, Ichabod. Pinions, origin fic for the Advent Children triplets. Really all about Sephiroth. There's sex in this eventually, but that wasn't the point for me in writing it; I really loved doing all the bits about being raised in a lab and strategies for staying sane. Mean Streets: I want to cheat and list all of SDR&R, which was actually a damn good time to write. But if I have to pick just one, it's this one, where Roxas and Axel first meet. Clear as the Sun, one of my HC Drace/Gabranth stories. The one that started with the Song of Solomon, Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners?, and just went on from there. My love affair with the language of FFXII, let me show you it. And now, cheating: I want to be able to list all the series things I've done -- SDR&R, BCAU, Which Way Home -- when I start writing continuities like that, it's because I'm having a damn good time with them. I wanted to have time to list some Baccano! fic, because it's been a great fandom to play in! I feel like a lot of my "miscellaneous" category deserved mention! Also, why isn't there any SMT fic in this list? Five is way too short a number. But I am already slacking on helping with the unpacking effort, so I should get going instead of making a "next five" and "five more" list. ^^; Tagging you -- yes, you -- if you're interested.
